Muhammed Lawal is known to taking and wanting big fights and know that former Ultimate Fighting Championship star Chael Sonnen signed with Bellator, people would think 'King Mo' is targeting a headline bout with the former UFC light heavyweight title contender. However, Lawal is not interested.
The 35-year-old mixed martial artist said that he does not think of fighting against Sonnen since 'The American Gangster' offered him help years ago when he faced a potentially life-threatening staph infection, as reported by MMA Fighting.
'King Mo' narrated how Sonnen came out of the blue and hit him up offering money to pay for his bills after suffering a bad staph four years ago caused by a torn ACL which needed 14 surgeries to treat. Though Lawal said he did not need the money back then, he said that Sonnen reaching out to him was "shocking."
The former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion added that he and the 39-year-old Sonnen are "cool" as he seems to still be baffled by how Sonnen offered help to him, noting that not many people are willing to help others.
Recently, Lawal pulled off a unanimous decision win against Satoshi Ishii in Bellator 169 in Dublin, Ireland and hopes that Sonnen, who would be facing Tito Ortiz in his Bellator debut in January, would take the victory.
Lawal said that while Sonnen has earned a reputation of being a trashtalking machine, he is in reality a "cool" man."
While he and Sonnen are friends, Lawal is having beef with former Bellator chief executive officer Bjorn Rebney, also reported by mixed martial arts website. 'King Mo' called out Rebney in an Instagram post as "1 big d*ck rider" after the latter joined the MMA Athletes Association which advocates rights for fighters.
Rebney has a reputation for bad treatment of his fighters back when he was CEO of Bellator and Lawal found it dubious that he joined the MMAAA.
The next for 'King Mo' might be the winner between heavyweights Matt Mitrione and Fedor Emelianenko.
