As the sport of mixed martial arts grows at an exponential rate, a lot more athletes from different fields are looking to get involved. These athletes are looking to create a fighting organization as big in terms of influence as the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
One such athlete is British boxer Amir Khan, who has participated in 35 professional fights throughout his career and who believes that there is a big possibility of a homegrown version of the UFC to be a huge success. This would be a wise move, as the number of people attending live MMA events and paying for pay-per-view subscriptions only seems to be increasing.
Khan wants to promote the sport in places like India, a country with a population of over 1.2 billion people, according to the Express. He would also like to see mixed martial arts take on a larger presence in the United Kingdom. A successful franchise would not be that far off in the UK, as some big names in MMA have come from there, for example: Michael "The Count" Bisping.
Khan may be looking to step into a new direction in a fight game especially since he has not fought in about seven months since his KO defeat to Canelo Alvarez last May 2016. However, he is currently in talks to take on fellow British boxer Kell Brook sometime in May 2017, according to the Independent. Brook is also looking to bounce back from a loss after the legendary Gennady Golovkin defeated him.
Khan has attributed the success of mixed martial arts in recent years to fighter such as Conor McGregor. He has described the opportunity of working in MMA to be brilliant and a good investment that is sustainable with his boxing career. Khan also had some choice words to say about his possible opposition.
"[Brook] is a fight that I would love to have. I have changed my mind because of the Triple G [Golovkin] fight," he told the Express. "Kell was smart taking that fight. He knew he was going to get beat but he still took it because he knew he was going to get paid well and make a name for himself," he added.
