Current UFC women's bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes became a Brazilian hero when she dethroned then champion Miesha Tate to claim the title. Now Nunes is slated to face former champion turned actor and professional wrestling superstar Ronda Rousey on Dec. 30, Friday, at UFC 207.
Lest we forget how dominant of a force the current women's bantamweight champion can be, the UFC has recently released the fight between Tate and Nunes at UFC 200. The Brazilian always looked the better of the two during their matchup coming in with a sizeable 2-inch advantage in the height department as well as a whopping 4-inch reach advantage.
Amanda Nunes showed her dominance in the stand-up game by being able to greatly hurt then-champion Tate while they were on their feet. Nunes was not too shabby on the ground either, as she was able to sink a rear-naked choke to easily dispose of Tate early on, in the first of their contest, MMA Fighting reported.
Following this performance, it would be exciting to see what approach Nunes will take against Rousey in her first title defense. We should all remember that Rousey is no fluke, being able to submit most of her opponents in the first round as well with her signature armbar. Even though Rousey has been out of the UFC's spotlight for a considerable amount of time now, that does not mean that the champion can take it easy on her.
Rousey has a lot to prove, especially as she tries to bounce back after the first loss of her professional mixed martial arts career. Her former beau Brendan Schaub is still concerned for Rousey especially with the amount of time she has taken to get back into the swing of things in the sport, as well as with her admitting to having suicidal thoughts due to her loss, according to News.com.au.
"You look at a real fighter like Conor McGregor," the publication quoted Schaud as saying. "When he lost to Nate (Diaz) he was like, 'I want to fight tomorrow. Give me that f***** fight back man.' His team was like, 'Don't take that fight, it's a bad fight for you.' He was like, 'No, I'll do it at 170 pounds just to prove to the doubters that I can do it.' That's what you want out of a fighter."
The women's bantamweight face-off between Nunes and Rousey is set to feature as the main event of UFC 207, which is set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their fight follows the men's bantamweight title bout between champion Dominick Cruz and undefeated prospect Cody Garbrandt.
