"Valkyria Chronicles" original game series will still continue despite the upcoming video game. The game director hopes to announce something new in 2017.
Director Takeshi Ozawa and Producer Youichi Shimosato told the official Japanese PlayStation Blog staff member in an exclusive interview that they intend to continue the original series. They explained that the first contacts for the upcoming "Valkyria Revolution" started in August 2014 with the first pitch made in September that year. It started officially for development in February 2015.
Ozawa revealed that there were several in-house pitches for a sequel after the third sequel of the game series, but it did not work out. With the release of the upcoming title, they are hoping to continue the franchise as a combined IP together with the one from the original series. They also do not want the fans to think that they do not plan to make another title from the original series in the future.
The developers were aware that the fans thought the game series has already ended. Some also thought that the series will continue exclusively with the upcoming title, but Shimosato revealed that this is not the case. Ozawa added that the original game series has already established with a solid world view.
The director explained that as developers, they want to create something new aside from their usual IP. If they stuck with the same IP and tried to forcibly promote something completely new within that world, they might compromise the concept of the series.
The upcoming game title will focus on the coolness towards fantasy elements, Ozawa explained. The original game series focused mostly on the military elements, which is why they wanted to go for the fantasy elements to make something new. They want the project to achieve more variety, and this is the role of the new style of the new title.
Shimosato explained that they wanted to avoid the game being excessively dependent to a player's skill in action games. They wanted a balanced system that they could properly define as a JRPG. They wanted the players to feel that they are playing a war drama through gameplay and also experience the story as well.
Ozawa told 4Gamer in their traditional year-end mass interview that he is hoping to announce something new in 2017. He also said that with the release of "Valkyria Revolution," he hopes that players will enjoy the war and historical drama in it.
