"The Blacklist" has been confusing its viewers with Liz's ((Megan Boone) true parentage for over three seasons. Recently, showrunner Jon Bokenkamp shared his thoughts about a popular fan theory surrounding Liz's mother and Red (James Spader).
The midseason finale of "The Blacklist" Season 4 provided vital information about Liz's father. After being drugged and poisoned, Red finally relented and told Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen) that Liz is his daughter.
However, Red also lashed out a Kirk on whether that line was what the villain wanted him to say. Given Red's confusing statements, some viewers are still unsure whether his revelation is true.
Coupled with the scene featured in the NBC show's midseason 4 finale, Red's whispered message to Kirk may have revealed vital information about Liz's true parentage. The information was enough to stop Kirk for a quick moment and resulted to the end of the said character trying to claim Liz as his own daughter.
Meanwhile, story speculations posted on TV Guide recently highlighted a fan theory that hinted of Red's potential big secret. Dubbed as the "Mommy Theory," many fans speculated that Red might be Liz's mother Katarina (Lotte Verbeek) instead of her father.
It may have also been the message that Red passed on to Kirk as shown in the midseason finale of "The Blacklist" Season 4. However, executive producer Bokenkamp debunked the said theory during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Describing the "Mommy Theory" as a "wild one," the showrunner expressed his amusement over the various speculations that viewers came up with about Liz and Red. He added, "I'd love to have someone walk me through the logic of exactly how that would work."
Bokenkamp also mentioned of the many fan theories that he heard about surrounding the NBC show's two protagonists, that included how Liz might be a robot and how Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) might be Tom's (Ryan Eggold) sibling. However, the showrunner declined to comment on the said theories' potential validity.
