F1 star Fernando Alonso is still active racing at the age of 35 years old. However, he recently claimed that the sport he plays has become boring. Alonso pointed out that it happened when Michael Schumacher retired for the first time in 2010.
According to Auto World News, Alonso believes that the most exciting time in F1's history was in the 2000s. It was when he and Schumacher were dueling in several great races. The 35-year-old Spaniard has not won a championship since 2006 while Schumacher is officially retired and sadly, bedridden after a freak accident in 2013.
Alonso and Schumacher had great races in the mid-2000s but the former thinks that the sport has become boring like the 1980s. He compared today's F1 racing to the "boring" days of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.
"Television figures, spectators are going down now, like it was in these boring years in the '80s where Senna, Prost and these people were saving fuel, saving tires and things like that, so it's exactly the same boring as it was at that time," Alonso told Eurosport in an interview.
However, the two-time Grand Prix champion is optimistic about the 2017 season being exciting again. He pointed out the new designs coming in this year that will increase the performance of cars by four to five seconds.
"I think this will make that excitement of driving and this joy of driving because we'll feel the grip and we can push in the corners," Alonso said.
"El Nano" has won two F1 World Championships during since entering his first Grand Prix in 2001. He has won a total of 32 Grand Prix and has 97 podium finishes. He started his career under Minardi before joining Renault in 2003.
In his first stint with Renault, he won his two world championships. He signed with McLaren in 2007 before coming back to Renault from 2008 to 2009. He spent the next four seasons with Ferrari but he returned to McLaren last year.
Alonso's last win was at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix. He ranked 10th last season with 54 points but he certainly wants to improve that this season. Check out the video below for some of the highlights of his F1 career.
