Fans have been clamoring for a bout between the Undertaker and John Cena at WrestleMania 33. In spite of enormous demand from wrestling fanatics, WWE CEO Vince McMahon has reportedly already chucked the idea of this matchup out the window.
The original plan was that John Cena would go on to beat AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at this year's Royal Rumble. Meanwhile, the Undertaker was the one billed to win the rumble itself. There were even reports suggesting that the Undertaker would have been the one to go into this year's WrestleMania with the title.
These results would have setup the matchup between Cena and the Undertaker at "the grandest stage of them all." However, due to the match already being scrapped, a lot of changes had to be made on the road to WrestleMania. As of right now, there are no plans to have the Undertaker compete for any major WWE title as well, according to Forbes.
The Undertaker may even end up facing someone from the opposing roster, SmackDown. This is due to the fact that most Raw-branded, WrestleMania-worthy opponents for him already have nearly confirmed matchups at the event. The only plausible Raw opponent for him there would be Finn Balor, who is currently out recovering from a shoulder injury.
The rumor mill also suggests that former two-time NXT champion Samoa Joe will make his main roster debut at the Royal Rumble contest. This match may even be used as a catalyst to have him in one of the major matches at the upcoming WrestleMania in Orlando, Florida.
Other NXT stars may soon be headed to the main rosters of the WWE as well. The WWE Performance Center has what they call their "Terry Taylor" class, which is currently developing top professional wrestling talents to perform on the main roster. A number of recognizable names are in this class including, but not limited to TM-61, Hideo Itami, Kassius Ohno, Elias Samson, Tye Dillinger, Alexander Wolfe, Andrade "Cien" Almas, NXT Tag Team Champions Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa and NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura, according to Wrestling Inc.
