Suzy from K-pop girl group Miss A has released her title track and EP "Yes No Maybe" on Jan. 23. The song follows "Pretend", her pre-debut single which was made public on Jan. 17.
According to Billboard, Suzy's new music "Yes No Maybe" is a "midtempo, melancholy ballad that draws the '90s era pop sensibilities" with the "steady beat laid over subtle electronic whirring" as its main feature.
For the music chart website, Suzy's airy vocals complimented the music of her title track and described her singing each lyric "with a hint of restraint". The article also revealed that "Yes No Maybe" is written by her management agency's founder, JYP Entertainment's Park Jin Young.
Suzy's solo single is released along with the music video which according to Billboard "have drawn inspiration on Hong Kong's cinematography with particular references on the works of filmmaker Wong Kar-wai".
The article also pointed out Suzy's "lovelorn femme fatale" character in the "Yes No Maybe" music video which is a similar theme to Seohyun of Girls' Generation who debuted solo on Jan. 17 with her song "Don't Say No".
On the same date as Seohyun's "Don't Say No" release, the Miss A singer dropped her "pre-release" single "Pretend". According to Soompi, "Pretend" served as a preview of Suzy's upcoming solo debut. She even performed a "Vertical Live" version of the song on Dingo Music last Jan. 16.
With the successful release of "Pretend" which topped Korean music charts, Suzy had a Naver V Live broadcast to celebrate with her fans. A separate Soompi article revealed the singer opening up about her feelings about her solo debut during the broadcast.
"Because it's my first solo album, there were a lot of things that stressed me out. The choreography, the recording, and the music video editing all needed a lot of work. There were lots of hard times but I enjoyed the process," Soompi cited the singer during her Naver Live broadcast last Jan. 21.
Suzy's first solo mini album "Yes No Maybe" is composed of six songs, two of which are written by the singer herself.
