Kojima Productions released a second trailer for "Death Stranding" during The Game Awards 2016. The preview featured director Guillermo del Toro as a character, sparking speculations about his involvement. The director has now confirmed he is not creatively involved in the project.
"I'm involved as a character," del Toro told IGN. "Kojima-san called me and said, 'I want you to be a character in the game,' and I said, 'Gladly.' He's discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I'm not involved, creatively, at all."
The director further explained that "Death Stranding" was purely Hideo Kojima's project. The extent of del Toro's involvement included his motion capture work, the permission to use his facial features in the game and to encourage Kojima with his ideas.
Fans will recall that del Toro and Kojima were originally going to collaborate for "Silent Hills" and did work on a playable demo titled "P.T." The game was going to star "The Walking Dead" alum Norman Reedus. Konami eventually cancelled the game and Kojima broke off from Konami.
"Death Stranding" is also bringing back Norman Reedus, who will portray the game's protagonist. Actor Mads Mikkelsen is also featured in the game and will be the game's main antagonist. The exact role of del Toro's character is still unknown.
Guillermo del Toro has had a full plate recently, with the launch of the critically acclaimed "Trollhunters" series on Netflix and he is directing "The Shape of Water," which releases this year. He is also serving as writer and producer for the sequel to "Pacific Rim."
No official launch date has yet been announced for "Death Stranding." Kojima previously stated that the game would come out before 2019 but gave no specifics. The game is expected to be showcased during Sony's E3 presentation this year and then released in 2018, Attack of the Fanboy reported.
