A man named Zhang was mauled to death by a tiger at a resort on Dongqian Lake in Zhejiang Province on Saturday. The victim climbed a fence into the animal’s enclosure to allegedly escape paying for a ticket.
The Telegraph reported that Zhang and a friend climbed a fence, while his wife and two children and the wife of his friend bought tickets for themselves. He passed through a wire netting and climbed a wall to enter the tiger enclosure, but his friend stayed back.
Zoo Visitors Witness Attack
Visitors watched in horror from a distance as the tiger attacked Zhang. Some zoo visitors were able to take a video on the mauling and one posted on social media a clip showing tigers circling Zhang who was lying on the ground. Local police shot one tiger dead and dispersed three remaining tigers using firecrackers and water cannons, The Hindu reported.
Another video showed a tiger biting the body of Zhang who died later in a hospital. Screams of zoo visitors could be heard on the video clip’s audio.
PETA Comments
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the incident reflected the problem of keeping animals in captivity. “Attacks by captive big cats on people - which occur with staggering regularity - illustrate the profound level of stress, anxiety and agitation these animals experience every day of their lives,” Jason Baker, PETA vice president of international campaigns, said in a statement.
Xinhua News Agency said that surveillance footage of the incident at the Youngour Wildlife Park in Ningbo City is being reviewed.
It is the second tiger attack in just more than six months. In July, Siberian tigers attacked two female visitors at the Badaling Wildlife World. The married daughter who left the car inside the tiger park was killed, while her mother who tried to free her daughter was injured.
