American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. will not leave retirement to fight UFC champion Conor McGregor. The billionaire unbeaten fighter denied a report that he has agreed to a mega fight with McGregor.
The Irish Sun reported that Mayweather and McGregor have agreed on financial terms for a boxing match. However, a third party is blocking the signing of a deal, according to MMA News.
Dana White Opposes Fight
It is McGregor who is bent on pursuing the match against “Money May” despite the opposition of UFC President Dana White who warned of an epic fail if the bout would take place. In 2016, McGregor got a boxing license from California.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Mayweather said, “There seems to be several rumors floating around media recently however, let the record show, there hasn't been any deals made in regards to a fight between myself and any other fighters.” He added, “I am happily retired and enjoying life at this time. If any changes are to come, be sure that I will be the first to let the world know,” the New York Daily News reported.
Nevada Official Says There are Talks
White likewise denied there is a match between McGregor and Mayweather. But Anthony Marnell, chairman of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, claimed real talks have been held about the bout, citing ESPN. He explained, “It still seems like a long shot, but when there is a lot of money involved, people tend to figure it out. There are a lot of cooks in the kitchen, but I'm not sure if we're going to eat.”
According to ESPN’s Stephen Smith, he spoke to Mayweather on Saturday during the NBA game between the Warriors and Thunders in Oklahoma City. Smith quoted the retired boxer as telling him “we’re getting very, very close” to the mega fight.”
