With "Game of Thrones" set to air its penultimate season, avid fans of the HBO series can expect to see tense encounters and unexpected partnerships in the show. Latest spoiler news hinted of Melisandre's (Carice van Houten) potential return to the TV adaptation of George RR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels.
"Game of Thrones" Season 6 showcased a look at Melisandre's powers when she helped to bring Jon (Kit Harington) back from the dead. However, the same season of the HBO series also featured Melisandre's departure from Jon's side after Davos (Liam Cunningham) revealed her role in Shireen's (Kerry Danielle Ingram) murder.
Recently, Cunningham shared his thoughts about Melisandre's potential appearance in "Game of Thrones" Season 7. In an interview with IGN, the actor teased that given the said witch's abilities, it would come as no surprise if the Red Woman will play an important role in upcoming episodes.
Similar to how other female characters of the HBO series exhibited strong capabilities or grown up to become skilled fighters, Melisandre might also have the chance to display her powers in the show's penultimate season. Cunningham even cited Daenerys' (Emilia Clarke) journey to become Queen of the Dragons, Arya's (Maisie Williams) transformation into a skilled assassin, as well as Cersei's (Lena Headey) rise to the Iron Throne as examples of some of the female characters development in "Game of Thrones."
Apart from Melisandre's potential reappearance, Cunningham also commented on some of the bizarre theories that fans came up with. Despite a few correct fan theories, some of the story speculations were "so ludicrous" that even made him laugh, according to the actor.
Meanwhile, Cunningham mentioned that he and other cast members have started to feel the urgency in completing all of the filming requirements for the HBO show's final two seasons. The actor told Mashable that given the impending end of "Game of Thrones," the mood on set can sometimes be "a little odd."
The actor explained, "Things are coming to a head, so not only do we feel the passage of time ... that's also been reflected in what we're shooting. So ... it adds to the work and adds to the tension and we can use it [in the scenes]."
