The popular BBC drama fans wonder if 'Sherlock' season 5 cancellation news is true as Mark Gatiss recently hinted that the show may have bitten the dust after all.
According to the showrunner and also Sherlock's brother Mycroft Holmes in the series, Gatiss' had a very lackluster response to the future of "Sherlock" Season 5. Gatiss, as cited by The Sun, appeared at WhatsOnStage Awards teased that the Season 4 might be the last as the show's lead actors, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Dr. Watson), are incredibly busy with their individual schedules and may not be able to find time to shoot for "Sherlock."
"And obviously we left it in a very happy place... if that's the end I'd be very happy where we left it," Gatiss added that gave the fans jitters that the show may get axed eventually.
This is not the first time that Cumberbatch and Freeman's busy schedule has been touted as the reason for "Sherlock" Season 5 cancellation. Now that both the actors have set a foot in Hollywood, it was always speculated that it is only a matter of time when playing the popular sleuth and his sidekick would have to take a backseat.
Freeman and Cumberbatch have both joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is keeping the actors busy. Gatiss explained that it is very difficult to align the actors' dates with the production schedule.
Meanwhile, Steven Moffat, the co-creator of the show, hinted in a recent BBC Q&A that if they had to end the show, Season 4 would be it. Ending it in any other season would have left too many cliffhangers, Moffat added.
However, even though "Sherlock" Season 5 cancellation rumor is gaining traction, Cumberbatch has already expressed his interest in playing the Baker Street detective for as long as the show is on. "Dr. Strange" actor said that he would "never say never" to reprising his role, but also added that the series felt "like the end of an era."
