With "Game of Thrones" now down to its last two seasons and 13 episodes, fans are now clamoring for a spinoff to extend their stay in Westeros. Indeed, HBO has answered their pleas.
The New York Times reported that HBO is developing scripts for a spinoff series that will "explore different time periods of George R.R. Martin's vast and rich universe." Variety adds that cable channel is exploring multiple possible spinoffs. There is no timeline for the projects but they are taking as much time as they can to work on the scripts. "As with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in," a spokesperson from HBO said.
Among the writers involved in the "Game of Thrones" spinoff projects are Max Borenstein ("Kong: Skull Island"), Jane Goldman ("Kingsman: The Golden Circle"), Brian Helgeland ("Legend") and Carly Wray ("Mad Men"). "Game of Thrones" executive producers Dan Weiss and David Benioff will also be involved in the projects, as will George R.R. Martin.
While information on the stories remains under wraps, here are some potential stories that will make for awesome "Game of Thrones" spinoffs.
The Dunk and Egg Stories
This series written by Martin take place 90 years before the events in "Game of Thrones." The story is based on Ser Duncan the Tall and a young Aegon V Targaryen, known as Egg. The story follows the duo's journey, which later lead to the momentous Blackfyre Rebellion.
Aegon's Conquest
200 years or so before Robert's Rebellion, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms was formed and the Iron Throne was forged. Before that time, all the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros were led by individual rules such as Torrhen Stark of the North. The story follows Aegon Targaryen and how he unified the entirety of Westeros into one realm. The timeline follows the Doom of Valyria, which wiped out the entire Valyrian freehold. Instead of helping create a new freehold, Aegon instead set his sights on a unified Westeros.
The setting of the story is a complete turn from the "Game of Thrones" era, because during Aegon's Conquest the Targaryens were the most powerful family by far and their dragon riding abilities were common knowledge instead of just being considered as myth.
