The contention for being the best antivirus program on the Windows platform is really huge. In terms of sales and assured protection, BitDefender and Kaspersky have come out with flying colors in a recent survey.
At the moment, over twenty seven programs are available in the market and that's a lot for consumers to choose from. The test conducted was based on three different factors namely the protection offered by the software combined with its performance and ease of access.
While third party programs have managed to top the list, Microsoft's own integrated program was the last in the results. It confirms that users should no longer rely on it and should consider investing in a paid antivirus solution. And, experts who participated in the test also confirmed that even a free antivirus software is much better than what Microsoft has to offer, says PC World.
An extensive test for all the best AV programs available in the market was conducted by AV Test website based on which these results have been published. They also tested programs for Windows 7 but as Windows 8.1 is the latest in the series, it is being given higher importance.
While BitDefender and Kaspersky holds the first two places, the third was held by a surprising new entrant Qihoo 360. The big player Avira has been pushed to fourth place while McCafee, Avast and AVG scored much lesser than the top three.
Microsoft's AV found only 76 percent of the malware samples while most other programs easily found 95 percent of it. The top three found hundred percent of known malware samples and has a user friendly interface which helped them win the contest for the month of February.
