The animated film "Home" topped the box office charts this week as it got an estimated domestic gross of $54 million. "Get Hard" stands at the second place, with an estimated domestic gross of $34 million. On the third spot comes "Insurgent," which got an estimated domestic gross of $22 million.
Due to weak reviews, "Home" was projected to get $26 million. However, after its release last Mar. 27, the Fox film has obtained an estimated domestic gross of $54 million and an estimated gross of $47 million, for an estimated total gross of $101 million.
As per Screen Rant, the domestic gross of the animated film this week surpassed Dreamwork's "How To Train Your Dragon 2," with the gross of $49.4 miilion in its first three days last summer. The film covers a broad audience, from kids to adults, as compared to its competitors this week. Having almost no animated film competition is a great advantage for the film to boost its gains this week, which will possibly carry on in the succeeding weeks.
Fox News revealed that "Home"'s achievement for the week is one of Dreamwork's best records for a film premiere since "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," which got an initial gross of $60.3 million in 2012. Following "Turbo" and "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," "Home" is the sole film the company is releasing this year.
"Home" is an animated buddy comedy film, based on Adam Rex's children's book "The True Meaning of Smekday." It follows the story of a teenage girl named Tip, who met an alien named Oh. Oh comes from the optimistic alien race called Boov. Led by Captain Smith, the aliens enters the Earth to hide from their enemies.
The voice cast include Steve Martin as Captain Smek, Matt Jones as Kyle, Jennifer Lopez as Lucy Tucci, Jim Parsons as Oh, and Rihanna as Gratatuity "Tip" Tucci.
Tim Johnson helmed the film, along with Suzanne Buirgy and Chris Jenkins as his co-producers. Tom Astle and Matt Ember penned the script.
"Home" is still showing in theaters. Meanwhile, fans will be seeing James Wan's "Fast and Furious 7" this week.
