Hold on to your katanas, mercs! We have confirmation that Deadpool will, indeed, be given an R Rating.
Lead actor Ryan Reynolds staged a mock "Extra" interview on the Deadpool set with Mario Lopez from JoBlo to give exclusive details regarding the movie.
Starting off the interview, Reynolds talked about how filming was going on location. Lopez also commented on the character of Deadpool being in "X-Men Origins: Woverine", which prompted Reynolds to counter that the new film's take on the character will be completely different.
The topic turned to the speculation that the film was being given a PG-13 rating. Reynolds responded somberly that the studio would try to stick to the spirit of the comics, with Mario countering that it was a good idea to keep the film family-friendly.
As long-time Deadpool fans will know, the comic is far from family-friendly. With violence and the lead character's motor mouth constantly spewing obscenities, an R Rated film would be more in keeping with the spirit of the character. Even Ryan Reynolds was pushing for an R Rating.
So while Lopez was discussing the virtues of a family-friendly film to a frowning Ryan Reynolds, we see Deadpool (the character) walk behind him and, in true Deadpool fashion, smash the interviewer's head in with a studio light.
After a quick obscenity referring to Mario Lopez's character "Slater" from 90's sitcom "Saved by the Bell", Deadpool then greets the audience with "April Fools!" and announces that the movie "will of course, be Rated R". This was confirmed by 20th Century Fox, as reported by ComicBookResources.
Deadpool is a character known for constantly breaking the fourth wall, directly interacting with readers and audiences, as well as being aware of real-world pop culture.
