Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly" has been a commercial and critical success. The rapper's third studio album almost featured the voice of the iconic performer Prince. In an interview with Hot 97, Lamar said that he recorded with Prince. He was pressing for time to complete the new album and had a tight schedule, because of which a track could not be finalized which would feature Prince.
Lamar and Prince worked together at Purple One's Paisley Park Estate in Minnesota which is Prince's headquarter. They also played a show for a Yahoo live stream. Lamar stated they had a good vibe but were unable to compose a final track and due to time constraints he had to leave, but he was happy to have had the opportunity of working with Prince and really liked how the singer was able to take control of the music, according to Rolling Stones.
Lamar also stated he was able to gain a lot of musical experience by working with Prince, and really liked how the singer diverted from the rules to add more creativity and control to the music, Consequence of Sound reported.
In his album "To Pimp a Butterfly", Lamar also covered the sensitive topic of racism. Lamar stated that the album can be interpreted in many ways. It is focusing more on patrimony which is personal and national. Lamar uses his skill of vocal skills to express his inner conflicts.
Women also have a major role in the lyrics of his songs where their conflicts and complications have been reflected by, Lamar's keen observation. Through his lyrics, he reflects upon their experience of life and the pressures of home and life on the street.
"To Pimp a Butterfly" has been at the top of the Billboard 200 for two straight weeks.
