“Wolf Warrior,” helmed and top-billed by martial artist Wu Jing, grabbed the box-office lead during the Tomb Sweeping holiday weekend, pulling off a revenue of nearly $33 million in its first four days.
Playing both in Imax and 3D, Wu takes the role of a kicked-out Chinese Special Forces soldier who joins an enigmatic insurgent group called the “Wolf Warriors.”
The action-packed film also stars Yu Nan and Scott Adkins, a British martial artist.
Research firm Entgroup revealed that the movie had a total of 5.87 million admissions from 153,284 screenings during the Qingming, or Tomb Sweeping Day. The holiday gives opportune time for people to return to their homes and commemorate their forebears at their graves.
Landing on the second spot is “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” taking in another near-to-$31 million adding to a total gross of $55.23 million.
The comic book adaptation was directed, co-written and co-produced by Matthew Vaughn, who is notable for “Kick-Ass” and “X-Men: First Class.” The box-office performance was believed to be boosted by the movie’s lead actor, Colin Firth, in China.
The film had a total of 5.63 million admissions from 193,531 screenings. It also stars Samuel Jackson, Mark Strong, Michael Caine, Sofia Boutella and Mark Hamill.
The Liu-Jiang directed “Let’s Get Married” took the third sport, gathering $22.91 million in a span of four days, totaling to 137,054 screenings and 4.27 million admissions.
The movie features Gao Yuanyuan and Jiang Wen.
Meanwhile, the psychological thriller “Insanity,” starring Lau Ching Wan and Huang Xiaoming, came at the fourth place.
For its first three days, the David Lee Kuan Yew-directed and Derek Yee Tung Sing-produced film gathered $4.33 million. It stars Fiona Sit and Alex Fong.
Completing the top five box-office hits over the holiday weekend is Disney’s "Cinderella," taking in another $3.42 million for a total of $69.45 million for 24 days after its release in the country.
Completing the top 10 were “House of Magic” ($2.98 million), “Lost and Love” ($2.4 million), “Taken 3” ($2.29 million), “Outcast” ($2.43 million) and “Two Thumbs Up” ($1.56 million).
