According to recent reports, a 65-year-old German woman is soon going to be a biological mother of quadruplets, setting a new world record. The 21-weeks-pregnant woman is already a mother of 13 children and seven grandchildren.
Annegret Raunigk's remarkable journey of pregnancy and delivery will soon feature in a TV documentary. A school teacher by profession, Raunigk made headlines earlier also when she gave birth to her 13th child, Lelia, at the age of 55.
The woman's latest pregnancy is the result of persistent efforts of artificial insemination using both donated sperm and eggs.According to Independent, Raunigk took the big step to satisfy the fancy of her youngest daughter as she demanded for a little sibling.
Later, Raunigk was shocked to learn during an an ultrasound session that she is carrying quadruplets. However, the granny turned down the option for 'selective reduction', where one or more fetus can be aborted, and opted to go ahead with her decision.
Raunigk will retire this year and claims to be extremely fit and fine. The school teacher feels that she is 'still quite fit' and is perfectly capable of taking care of her newborn babies as well as the teenage daughter for the next many years, Daily Mail reported.
"I think one needs to decide for oneself and not listen too much to the opinions of others," said the elderly mother whose eldest child is about 44-year-old.
The babies are due in summer. The successful full course of pregnancy will make Raunigk the world's oldest woman to give birth to quadruplets. The present record is held by Merryl Fudel, who was 55 at the time of her pregnancy.
