Microsoft released Skype for Business Client under Office 2013 as part of its monthly patch, this one for April, Tuesday, MS Office announced. It is also in the process of rolling out Skype for Business Online for Office 365 customers.
A new Lync Server version, dubbed as the Skype for Business Server, is also due for release in May. The company had previously announced that their newest server edition has the capacity to support high-availability like support for its "AlwaysOn" feature integrated in its SQL Server.
The company's Skype for Business is its high level unified communications product, called Lync in the previous years. Lync was introduced five years ago as an improved iteration of Office Communications Server. The rebranding of Lync was announced November while Skype for Business was made available in the form of a technical preview starting in March.
Those that are not ready to allow their users to go through the transition has the option to switch back to the Lynch interface, the company said. Instructions on how to roll back both for Lync Server and Lync Online have been posted to guide users towards a more convenient experience.
Microsoft unveiled that Skype for Business has controls for better compliance and "enterprise-grade" security features. Just as how the existing Lync and Skype clients operate, the new platform also provides meetings, video calls, voice calls, presence, instant messaging, faster file transfers with specific file information like name and size, emoticons for discussions, and OneNote for notes taking.
Microsoft is expecting to complete the update before May ends, the Next Web wrote.
