After releasing Windows 10 this summer, no additional releases will ever be made again as what happens, traditionally. Instead, Microsoft will only set its focus on providing updates and enhancements to Windows 10 for the years to come.
In Chicago's Ignite conference, Microsoft revealed that Windows 10, their latest operating system, will be its last OS iteration. Jerry Nixon, Microsoft's spokesperson, during the conference, said "Right now we're releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we're all still working on Windows 10."
The company will start to manage Windows more like how Apple manages its operating systems. After Windows 10 release, users will individually receive software enhancements through software updates, with W10 as the standard operating system.
Nixon also shared, "Recent comments at Ignite about Windows 10 are reflective of the way Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner, with continued value for our consumer and business customers," The Verge reported.
A few people are annoyed by the delays that Windows updates bring about, while a number of other users enjoy the extra features and fixes which the updates bring to the system, BBC wrote. While W10 will be the last, rumors have been circulating that the company will adopt a unique strategy for naming its products, for instance, Windows Gorilla.
Windows 10 is said to be released this summer. All Windows 7 and Windows 8 users will have it as a free update for a year. Rather than making use of Windows 9, they chose to skip the number to mark the end of an OS era.
