ABC's "Castle" Season 8 may take Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) in a new direction. Like Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) in CBS' "The Good Wife," Beckett never considered a career in politics. But when someone brings up the idea, she begins to think it over.
Spoiler alert: This update contains "Castle" Season 7 finale spoilers. Read on at your own risk.
In the finale episode of "Castle" Season 7, Beckett learns that a political party has been watching her progress at NYPD. When she applied to be precinct captain, the party thought she might be ripe for an even bigger arena. Beckett gets asked to consider running for senator.
In contrast, Alicia Florrick has just launched her own firm when her husband's political strategist, Eli Gold (Alan Cumming), asked her if she would like to run for the Office of the State's Attorney in Cook County. This happens in the last moments of "The Good Wife" Season 5 finale.
There is another ABC favorite where a female character is running for senator. In "Scandal" by Shondaland, the president's wife Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) is bent on becoming the president. She's deliberately taking the senatorial route to achieve her goal. Kate Beckett, in comparison, never considered such an action.
Alicia Florrick won the election, but she was later made to withdraw from contention when accusations of election fraud broke out. In "Castle" Season 8, Kate Beckett could become a senator. After all, this was already hinted at in Season 6.
In "Castle" Season 6, Episode 5, time traveler Simon Doyle (Joshua Gomez) told Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) he will be married to Senator Kate Beckett. Doyle also said the couple will have three kids. At the end of this episode, Beckett herself finds that Doyle's "prediction" came to pass.
Below are the lines exchanged among Castle, Beckett and Doyle. It remains to be seen whether "Castle" Season 8 would fully explore this plot line.
Simon Doyle: A real charmer, that one. I can't believe you marry her.
Castle: How did you know I marry her?
Doyle: One of your book jackets. You know, "Richard Castle lives in New York with his wife, Senator Beckett, and their three children."
Castle: Senator?
Beckett: Three kids?
"Time Will Tell" was written by series creator Andrew Marlowe and his wife and "Castle" producer Terri Miller. It was directed by Rob Bowman, who has directed several other big "Castle" episodes.
"Castle" Season 8 is expected to premiere in September 2015 on ABC.
