It's a glamorous night in Paris for Chinese cinema as the 5th Festival of Chinese Cinema in France (FCCF) opened on Monday, May 11.
Among those in attendance were Chinese actress Xu Jinglei, French actor Danny Boon and Chinese ambassador to France Zhai Jun.
The 5th Festival of Chinese Cinema in France has brought 10 outstanding Chinese films to France. "Somewhere Only We Know," a romantic drama filmed by Xu Jinglei, is one. Filmed entirely in Prague, Czech Republic, the film tells the story of a hearbroken young woman named Jin Tian who travels to Prague, the place where her grandmother grew up.
Released on Chinese screens in Feb. 2014, "Somewhere Only We Know" received good reviews and became the most popular Chinese film across the Atlantic in recent years.
Other Chinese cinematic masterpieces to be screened during the festival include "The Ferry," "Brotherhood of Blades" and "The Great Hypnotist."
The festival not only promotes the best of modern Chinese cinema; it is also an effort to improve Sino-French cultural relations.
In his speech, Ambassador Zhai Jun emphasized that both countries can learn from each other through film collaborations.
"In recent years, Chinese films have had a bigger market in France, especially last year. As part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, both countries co-produced 'Wolf Totem.' I believe there will be greater potential in such communication and cooperation," the ambassador said.
The 5th Festival of Chinese Cinema in France will run from May 11 to June 30, 2015, in selected French cities, including Paris, Lyon, Cannes, Strasbourg and Reunion Island.
