"The Vampire Diaries" ended on a highly emotional note on Thursday night after Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) somehow died and somehow lived.
In the episode entitled, "I'm Thinking of You All the While," Kai, the biggest villain in all of "The Vampire Diaries'" history, linked Elena's life to Bonnie's (Kat Graham).
At first, hopeful fans thought that this is a good idea because this only placed Elena in a time-freezing coma. However, this still means that she will not be part of the upcoming season of "TVD."
Meanwhile, in the event of Bonnie's passing, which will approximately take around 60 to 70 years, Elena could come back to life, exactly as how she looked like before she was placed in a coma, according to E! News.
In a previous interview, executive producer Julie Plec revealed that she initially offered Dobrev different storylines that would encourage her to renew her contract for another season.
This shows that her storyline in the finale episode of "The Vampire Diaries" opens the possibility that she could still return to the series anytime she pleases.
While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Plec revealed that she felt it wasn't time yet for Elena to die.
"It didn't feel like it was time to be done. It felt like there were so many relationships that were shifting and moving. And as beautiful as Damon and Elena's love story was, allowing them to get a place of being happy together, where do you go with Damon after that?" she said.
Do you think Dobrev should return to "The Vampire Diaries" sometime in the future to reprise her role as Elena Gilbert?
