A Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong inspired by the popular Japanese cartoon character Hello Kitty has attracted a strong following of customers although it will officially opennext month.
The Chinese restaurant is situated in the neighborhood of Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon and is currently undergoing a soft launch, but according to the Daily Mail customers are frequenting the restaurant round the clock to reserve tables.
While there are eateries around the world inspired by the feline cartoon character, the restaurant in Hong Kong is the first to serve themed Chinese food, according to The Telegraph.
It is reported that a maternity hospital centred on Hello Kitty exists in Taiwan, where staff unforms to linen and towels feature the face of the feline cartoon character.
Meanwhile, the official opening of the restaurant is set for June 1, and will comprise a menu with 37 to 40 dishes, each one in the shape of the cartoon kitty.
Reports surrounding the soft launch of the restaurant have revealed that from the décor to the crockery used to serve the cartoon themed cuisine in the restaurant, all bear the signature Hello Kitty character.
From Hello Kitty shaped dim sum, to buns with egg custard and mounds of fried rice, the dishes are plated in the shape of the kitty's face.
The eatery has generated a storm of media frenzy in China, and as a result the owner of the restaurant has taken on a pseudonym during publicity events.
The owner according to the Daily Mail who uses the name Wan Guang has told the People's Daily Online, that Hello Kitty is not as popular in Japan as the character is in Hong Kong.
