Prior to the death of Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) in "Game Of Thrones" season 5 finale episode titled "Mother's Mercy," Shireen Baratheon (Kerry Ingram) was killed in the hit HBO series' fifth season's penultimate episode titled "The Dance Of Dragons."
In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, "Game Of Thrones" season 5 finale and penultimate episodes director David Nutter weighed in on Stannis and Shireen's deaths.
When asked about what was it like directing Shireen's death, Nutter said, "It's not so much about watching her burn at the stake, but the reactions of people around her. Even the soldiers, saying to themselves, 'What are we involved in? This is madness.' And her mother finally breaking down and realizing she shouldn't do this."
Nutter thinks Stannis also felt regret even as it happened, and for the director, it was necessary to see the other side of that. Since everybody has dimensions in them, he said it is important to show "as much humanity within the characters as possible."
About directing Stannis' death, Nutter commented that Dillane was such a tremendous actor that for him, some sequences require complex camera work and complex shooting while simplicity works best for other sequences.
With the help of the outstanding visual effects by Joe Bauer and Steve Kullback, Nutter believes they were able to pull off the Dothraki scene. As a director, the things that he never wants include being noticed and having the camera dramatically take the viewers out of a sequence.
After "Game Of Thrones," Dillane is set to star in the new ABC1 show "The Tunnel," the British version of the Danish crime series "The Bridge."After Stannis, he is set to play Karl Roebuck, which he described to The Sydney Morning Herald as a "fairly outgoing, cheerful, relaxed" man who enjoys life.
