"Jurassic World" is on a roll as Universal's most recent dinosaur movie made another $61.6 million on its second week in China, with the film quickly reaching to a $161.7 million cumulative audience after 12 days, according to figures from the studio.
It comes as no surprise that the movie has captured Chinese interest--what with the suspense, action, and special effects it has. This further strengthens Hollywood's performance in 2015 after successful returns from Universal's "Furious 7" and Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," to name a few.
"Jurassic World" has so far had 339,013 screenings, and an estimated 10.88 million admissions in China, according to Entgroup's data.
However, it may not take long for "Jurassic World" to lose its momentum, as Friday marks the start of the movie industry's annual "blackout." This is a period when local movies take the spotlight, and major Hollywood films and other foreign movies take a back seat. This usually runs until the end of July.
Not far behind this week is Hong Kong action flick "SPL2: A Time for Consequences," which grossed $43.36 million in four days in China. This is a follow-up to "Cheang Pou-soi," a drama about corrupt police officers shown in 2005. Thai actor Tony Ja, who also made an appearance in "Furious 7," stars in this sequel.
"SPL2: A Time for Consequences," which also stars Wu Jing, Zhang Jin and Simon Yam, had 183,229 screenings and 7.3 million admissions, according to Entgroup.
"San Andreas" from Warner Bros. is at third, and is still doing good as it picked up another $12.51 million for a cume of $94.38 million, thanks to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's enduring popularity in China. This comes to 114,663 screenings and 2.1 million admissions after 20 days in Chinese theaters.
Fourth place goes to "Insurgent" racking up $9.14 million in its opening weekend. The second part of the popular "Divergent" series totaled 65,395 screenings and 1.5 million admissions.
"The Ark of Mr. Chow" is now on fifth place. This is a story of a special college program that recruited group of socially awkward geniuses. The film took in $4.49 million at theaters over its opening weekend.
Japan's animated film "Stand By Me" continues to stay strong, picking up another $2.86 million, putting it in sixth place and giving it a cume of $85.96 million after 25 days.
Taiwan's romance "Love Me, Love My Dog" is at number seven, as it scored $1.97 million, followed by local horror movie "Admission by Guts" with $710,000 in its opening week.
Bollywood's "PK" ranked ninth and is now the most successful Indian film in China, earning another $600,000, with a Chinese cume of $19.38 million after 31 days.
"Zai Jian Wo Men De Shi Nian" starring Guo Jiaming holds 10th spot, with total earnings of $370,000 and a cume of $850,000 after 10 days.
