Apple has sold more smartwatches than anyone else out there though the fact is that the Apple Watch is nowhere near the success that its peers, including iPhone and iPad, have reached recently.

While hard core figures aren't available, what can perhaps be a safe assumption is that Apple has sold more smartwatches than the entire Android Wear clan put together. However, even that pales when pitched against its own stablemates, the iPhone and the iPad, Tech Zone 360 reported.

Analysts have attributed the 'lukewarm' response to the fact that people had grown out of the habit of wearing watches in the first place once smartphones came onto the scene. Further, smartphones offer far more functionality than watches and users have grown used to depending on these.

For instance, users can set time based reminders and so on with the iPhone which can be accomplished on the Apple Watch too but on a much smaller scale given its miniscule screen real estate.

Another factor that can act against the Apple Watch is its price, which at $300 can't exactly be considered cheap. Add to this the fact that the Apple Watch is a piece of gizmo which has a very limited shelf life. Surely one is not likely to buy a new watch every few years, more so for something that costs upward of a few hundred dollars.

While still on the price thing, the cheapest Apple Watch costs $349, which can go up to $12,000 for the top-of-the-line model. There are a lot of other watches that one can buy in the same price band, with even high-end Swiss watches if one is ready to splurge, Pocket-Lint reported. However, unlike the Apple Watch, Swiss watches are built to last generations.

Lastly, it could be the naming itself that too is being held by some as responsible for the not so fantastic sales of the Apple Watch. Maybe it could have seen far greater uptake it was referred to as the iWatch, given our penchant for 'i' suffixed devices from Apple.
