New mutants that will debut in the upcoming superhero movie "X-Men: Apocalypse" were unveiled in the latest release of images on July 16, Thursday.
However, according to Entertainment Weekly, most of them are not new Marvel Comics characters, but younger versions of the existing well-known "X-Men" characters.
One of the younger characters is Storm, which will be played by Alexandra Shipp. "X-Men" fans are so familiar with her super power, but in "X-Men: Apocalypse" she is a troubled teenager with no direction in life though she can already control the weather at this time.
Another familiar mutant introduced was Jubilee, to be portrayed by Lana Condor in "X-Men: Apocalypse." In the film, she will be attending Professor Charles Xavier's school where her pyrotechnic energy plasmoids power will be unleashed.
Next was the handsome mutant Cyclops, to be played by Tye Sheridan. He and Jean Grey's love story will be featured in the latest "X-Men" film. In the movie, Sheridan will play a bad boy character who will eventually fall in love with a fellow mutant.
Meanwhile, the movie will have a comic relief in the character of young Nightcrawler. The younger mutant will be played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, who will be rescued in the film by fellow mutant Raven. Smit-McPhee will play a cool character who can physically mutate, teleport and move quite fast with adhesive feet and hands.
In "X-Men: Apocalypse," Sophie Turner will play an interested yet complicated character Jean Grey, who is not yet mature but is already considered as a prized student in Xavier's school because of her excellent telepathic and telekinetic superhuman abilities.
One of the biggest revelations in the recently released images was Apocalypse himself, the ultimate villain in the latest installment of "X-Men." The character will be played by Oscar Isaac. He will act as the evil mutant who already lived for 5,000 years.
During the 2015 International Comic-Con in San Diego, Isaac told the crowd that his character is "like a cult leader," according to Los Angeles Times. In addition, Apocalypse's main power is persuasion that he will use to exploit other characters.
However, some fans are not totally pleased with the new characters. Neel Bananapeel tweeted that Apocalypse in the new X-men installment "looks...really really bad."
On the other hand, T.R. Chambers thinks there is something wrong with the images of the new "X-Men" characters when he tweeted that he thought the shots "were cosplay." Others think Shipp does not fit Storm's character in the film as "Halle Berry is darker" than her, according to Charlie J's tweet.
Despite the divided reactions of fans, "X-Men: Apocalypse" is bound to be released on May 27, 2016 in North America.
