German newspapers have revealed that Manchester United is cooking a €100 million (£70.5 million) offer to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for forward Thomas Müller, according to Bleacher Report.
After the departure of forwards Robin van Persie to Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe SK and Radamel Falcao on loan to Chelsea from Monaco, Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal is left with Wayne Rooney as the first option striker.
However, the strong showing of new acquisition Memphis Depay in the recent International Champions Cup friendlies is suggesting that he can also thrive as a striker in van Gaal's system. The 63-year-old Dutch man needs more strikers, though.
Argentina national Ángel Di María is also reportedly discussing with the management of a possible move to Paris Saint-Germain less than a year after his British record €184.7 million (£59.7 million) transfer from Real Madrid last summer.
If Di María's request is granted, then United would certainly be short of goal scorers next season.
The 25-year-old Müller played for van Gaal at the onset of his senior career from 2009 to 2011 during the latter's stint with Bayern, as per The Guardian. This summer, the coach had already snagged midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger from his former team and is said to be set to get another player from the Allianz Arena.
Müller was reportedly van Gaal's first choice at striker, but rumors abound that he would settle for Poland national Robert Lewandowski if the Germans do not want to release the Weilheim native.
Just recently, however, van Gaal was saying that he may not be buying another striker altogether and may just look to sign someone from a different position.
