The Angry Birds 2 launch on Thursday was a success with 2.1 million downloads of the popular game sequel within the first 12 hours it was made available to the public, developer Rovio announced through a tweet.
The warm reception to the sequel - featuring new visuals, gameplay, character and ways to destroy the pigs - is not surprising, notes Techradar, since the original Angry Birds game was the most downloaded mobile game. It is available from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Among the new things that players of Angry Bird 2 would experience in the sequel is that for the first time, they can choose their own bird to chuck while challenging other gamers worldwide. New spells that gamers could cast to get higher Destruct-O-Meter score and earn more birds include blizzards, magic ducks and super-hot chili peppers.
Red, Chuck and Bomb are back with a new bird, Silver, displaying their fancy flying skills. But players could have more birds beyond the four avians by earning gems for more birds, lives and tickets which could be purchased.
But bringing the pigs down is also harder as the sty-dwellers also became smarter in the sequel as they construct new towers on Piggy Island, which makes it harder to beat them, reports CNET. Patrick Liu, creative director of Finnish firm Rovio, explains in a blog on Thursday why gamers should try the sequel.
"Angry Birds 2 doubles down on the core tenets of the original that our fans loved: destruction and more destruction!" He adds, "At the same time it adds a whole new layer of emergent strategy gameplay for both old and new fans to master."
The sequel hopefully would boost Rovio's revenue and help the game developer recover. In December, Rovio laid off 110 workers in its global workforce. In 2014, its revenue declined 9 percent as download of the game significantly went down from 2009 when it first released Angry Birds.
