It is double good news for fans of the 1990s hit television series "Baywatch" and actor Zac Efron. There are ongoing talks for a new movie version of the body-baring "Baywatch."
But instead of Pamela Anderson and Michael Hasselhoff who starred in the TV version that was viewed in 148 countries, the upcoming movie would star Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson, reports Hollywood Reporter. Fans of the two hunks should brace to see Zac and Dwayne in red speedos, unless the producers choose another color or garb the two in knee-length board shorts.
The movie would be shot in Malibu, California. Director is Seth Gordon who hopes to begin shooting in early 2016. The plot revolves around lifeguards who will try to save their beach from environmental destruction caused by an oil tycoon.
Johnson is a by-the-book lifeguard, while Efron is a young rule-flouting hothead lifeguard. To produce the movie are Seven Bucks Production, Beau Flynn and Ivan Reitman.
The film is set for release in 2017, after which a franchise would likely follow for players involved in "Baywatch" which is seen as striking the right balance between self-aware humor and telling an actual story with action elements similar to another TV hit series, "21 Jump Street.
Efron just finished shooting the comedy film "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" with Adam Devin, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza for Fox and Chernin Entertainment. He would also be seen in "Dirty Grandpa," a road trip comedy, featuring Robert de Niro, and "Neighbours 2" with Seth Rogen.
