Although Nina Dobrev will not be returning to "The Vampire Diaries," the series executive producer, Julie Plec, hinted that there is more to expect in the next season such as the reunion of the Salvatore brothers with their mother.
In the previous season, Lily (Annie Wersching), the Salvatore brothers' mother returned in the finale of season 6. However, she has some company, friends who are as well vampires with witch powers.
A conflict will ensue between Lily's sons - Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) - and the new family in season 7.
In an interview with Buddy TV, Plec said, "Damon and Stefan are embracing their mother that had essentially left them, has returned to their hometown with aliens that she calls her new family and that she calls them children."
"It will be unbelievable, sensitively exasperating," Plec added.
The producer further hinted that the conflict will teach the parties a lesson about dealing with relationships amongst themselves, that which the brothers have always longed to share with their mother. Eventually, they will have to make a decision on whether to make amends with her or just destroy her.
The next series will also feature Alaric (Matthew Davis). The loss of his unborn child and bride in season 6 finale will change his character in season 7.
Concerning the relationship between Damon and Bonnie (Kat Graham), the executive producer indicated that the two would nurture a mature type of relationship, which will be surprising because the two do not respect each other.
According to Enstarz, Caroline (Candice Accola) will try to regain full dominion of what she wants, although Stefan was clear that he would wait for her.
