Google announced on August 17, Monday that the next version of its Android M operating system will be named Marshmallow. Some key upgrades include improvements to the user interface including voice control software, sleep mode, volume control, and Android Pay.
Interestingly, "marshmallow" is one of the most commonly misspelled words on the web, including via Google's search engine. Wrong spellings include "marshmellow" and "marshmello"
Google first released details of Android M at its yearly Google I/O software conference in May, according to ZDNet. It stated that it wanted the new OS to be better connected across mobile devices, and between apps and the Internet.
The next Nexus smartphone's release date will likely follow. It will be for the LG Nexus 5.
Developers have had the chance to try out Android M's early versions of Android M in July. A key feature of Android Marshmallow is permission access.
Google's policy has been to name the subsequent version of Android OS based on the next letter in alphabetical order, and honoring a popular sugary food, according to The Washington Post. The latest ones have included KitKat and Lollipop.
Following another tradition the company has added a statue to the lawn of its headquarters, which features the Android robot holding a huge marshmallow. It is located in Mountain View, California.
A version of Marshmallow is now available to software developers. Google will likely roll out the new OS version to consumers in the autumn.
Candy marshmallows were first produced during the late 1800s. The traditional version of the sweet treat is a blend of marshmallow root, egg whites, sugar, and vanilla extract. Because marshmallow root is now scarce, it is usually substituted with gelatin.
