The Canadian men's basketball team entered the tourney with perhaps the deepest lineup they have ever fielded in FIBA Americas history. With Andrew Wigging, Anthony Bennett and a crop of up-and-coming NBA players leading the charge, Canada has the talent on paper to contend for the gold.
Canada vs. Cuba 2:30 p.m US EST (Boxscore & Stats)
On Monday, this same group of youngsters learned that talent alone isn't enough to win a rugged basketball game, succumbing to a battle-tested Argentine squad 94-87 in an entertaing Group B showdown.
Wiggins, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, posted 13 points and posterized several defenders at the rim, yet it was not enough to upend Argentines, who once again leaned on veteran campaigner Luis Scola (35 points and 13 rebounds).
Luckily for Canada, Wednesday's matchup against a still winless Cuba gives them opportunity to get on track before another testy confrontation with Venezuela on September 4 and then the J.J Barea-led Puerto Rico on September 3.
Dominican Republic vs. Panama (Box Score & Stats) - Dominican Republic will vie for their first win of the tournament when they duke it out against Panama at 12:00 noon US EST.
Venezuela vs. Puerto Rico (Box Score & Stats) - Venezuela targets their second win of the tourney after blasting Cuba on Day 1. However, they would need to overcome first an increasingly improving Puerto Rican team that split their first two assignments. Their showdown is set at 6:00 p.m US EST.
Mexico vs. Brazil (Box Score & Stats) - The host country opened its title defense with an impressive win over the Dominicans 84-66. Brazil, on the other hand, recovered from a sloppy debut on Day 2 as they defeated the Dominican Republic 71-65. On Tuesday, these two teams are expected to come all out, looking for that crucial win in Group A play.
