The sequel to F. Gary Gray's musical biopic "Straight Outta Compton" could integrate one of the most contentious periods of music history.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, "Straight Outta Compton 2" may extract some elements from S. Leigh Savidge and Jeff Scheftel's 2001 music documentary "Welcome to Death Row." It chronicled the rise and fall of the record company Death Row Records, which was founded in 1991 by Dr. Dre and Suge Knight. Critics said that Gray's film could have been divided into three series due to similar contents.
With the success of Gray's film, a sequel will not be a surprise. In fact, Dogg Pound rapper Daz Dillinger told TMZ that a sequel to "Straight Outta Compton" was in the works and the plot would take off from where the Gray's film concluded. While Dillinger also hinted the appearance of other hip hop icons from the West, new reports negated the rapper's revelations.
"Straight Outta Compton" follows the group NWA as it rises from the streets of Compton in Los Angeles California. Set in the mid-1980s, the film transfigures Hip Hop art, music, and literature with their tales about life. The film starred Corey Hawkins, Marcc Rose, Keith Stanfield, as Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, and Snoop Dogg, respectively, along with O'Shea Jackson Jr., Jason Mitchell, and Neil Brown Jr., among others.
With Gray as the film director, Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff penned the screenplay while Matt Alvarez, Scott Bernstein, Ice Cube, David Engel, Jon Jashni, Adam Merims, Ronald Muhammad, and William Packer co-produced the film, among others.
Gray's "Straight Outta Compton" is still showing in theaters while details on "Straight Outta Compton 2" are yet to be confirmed.
