"Hellboy" director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that his upcoming sci-fi film "Pacific Rim: Maelstorm" is still going to push through.
Previously, it has been reported that del Toro's upcoming film has been indefinitely halted by Universal. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, the "Pacific Rim: Maelstorm" filmmaker said that the film was not gone and they were still on it. He added that he and his team were preparing a screenplay for the film, along with a budget in three weeks.
With its predecessor "Pacific Rim" grossing an estimated $411 million in a global scale, del Toro thinks that his forthcoming "Pacific Rim: Maelstorm" has been "bumped back, as per The Wrap.
Director del Toro added that he might do another film, prior to the start of production for his sci-fi film. The title of the film was unrevealed, but the filmmaker said that it was a low-budget film, which stars John Hunt and a young actress. Additionally, he is set to helm the horror film "Crimson Peak," which features Mia Wasikowska and Tom Hiddleston.
Set a few years following the events in 2013's "Pacific Rim," del Toro's "Pacific Rim 2: Maelstorm" will center on Kaiju monsters that rise from a gateway at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi were reported to reprise their roles.
Along with del Toro set to helm the film, Travis Beacham and Zak Penn are also on board to pen the film script. The film will be produced by Callum Grreene, Jon Jashni, Mary Parent, Jillian Share, and Thomas Tull, among others.
Since "Pacific Rim: Maelstorm" is in its early phase of development, exact details on the plot, additional characters, and cast members are yet to be revealed.
Directed by del Toro, "Pacific Rim: Maelstorm" is slated to premiere in theaters in the United States on Aug. 4, 2017 while "Crimson Peak" hits theaters on Oct. 16.
