Nvidia has announced that the company's new GeForce GTX 980 desktop GPU is now heading to laptops, offering identical desktop gaming performance.
California-based tech company Santa Clara said that the new laptop GPU is also the same exact desktop chip. The chip will definitely work with laptops, as well as with laptop processors, power supplies and motherboards. The company promises that its latest powerful chip can provide an increase of 30 percent performance compared to the previous best mobile GPU.
GTX 980 laptops allows overlocking, memory speed adjustment, and a custom-tuned fan curve to keep the card cool; however, there will be some restrictions determined by NVIDIA and its original equipment manufacturers (OEM) such as ASUS and MSI that builds the GPUs and the laptops powered by the company.
The GTX 980 laptops will be powered by 2048 CUDA cores at over 1GHz, with a memory bandwidth of 224GB per second and the same 256-bit memory bus. It will be able to deliver 7 Gbps memory speed and 4-8 Phase Power Supplies, which allows for power to be routed to the chip more efficiently, thereby generating less heat.
In order to accommodate the GTX 980, laptop screen should be 17 inches or bigger. Two best samples are SLI model from MSI and a water-cooled model from ASUS, and other models with 4K screens, The Verge reported. GTX 980 laptops are also Oculus certified, meaning they can be the most VR-friendly laptops coming to market.
Among the laptop brands and versions that support the desktop GeForce GTX 980, according to PCGamer, are: Asus GX700, Clevo P775DM-G, Clevo P870DM-G, MSI GT72, MSI GT80, and Gigabyte Auros RX7Y4. Nvidia did not announce the official release date and pricing details of the laptops with GeForce GTX 980 chip.
