"Castle" season 8 premiered with an all time low early this week, pulling in only 6.8 million viewers and a 1.2 demo rating. It has been rumored that the ABC series starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic may be cancelled after this season.
According to TV Line, "Castle" season 8 episode 1 titled "XY" set an all time low for the series. Season 7's premiere and finale episode pulled 10.8 million and 8.4 million, viewers respectively.
The series may have received a following in its 8-year run but some critics perceive that it may be time to say goodbye to Castle and Beckett's story. Some claim that the repetitive storyline could be the reason why the viewers are slowly losing interest, resulting to a drop in ratings.
Katic has always been hesitant about returning for another season, explaining that she wanted to leave while the series was on top. Some took this as an indication that "Castle" was slowly losing its viewers. The actress claimed that it was best to tell a "great story and then go home and move onto something else."
In an interview with Deadline, Katic admitted that one of the reasons why she was hesitant to renew her contract with ABC was creator Andrew Marlowe's departure. She explained that Marlowe had played a monumental role in creating her character.
The new showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter, however, assured her that they knew the story and characters by heart. They reportedly convinced her that although they could be introducing a few changes to shake up the series, they would make sure that Beckett's integrity stays intact.
