Tech giant Google is planning to release a public transportation app exclusively in India. The app will be created through a collaboration with Google Maps and local government institutions.
Google product manager Dave Barth share in a blog post, "So we have made directions and timetable information for New Delhi metros and buses available offline. That way, even if you don't have a connection, you can still get directions between any bus or metro stops and find how late your bus or train will run."
The app called Delhi Public Transport will be released exclusively for Android devices. As the name suggests, the app's functionality is limited only in India's capital, New Delhi.
The app relies on Google Maps and its best feature is that it does not require constant Internet connection to function. The app is in constant development that is why Google added a Feedback button. This allow users to quickly lodge complaints or point out bugs directly to Google.
The app has offline functionality which led many analysts to believe that the app will require massive storage space. According to PC Mag, the Delhi Public Transport app will only take just about 1MB of precious storage space.
The new app was unveiled just about a month after Google announced that it will provide high speed public Wi-Fi connection in more than 400 train stations all across India. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that the Google Access and Energy team is aiming to bring the first 100 stations online by the end of 2016.
