Forbes reports that the new emojis are more than 150 with a new one added for nearly every category. Among the new emojis are a hugging face, thinking face, face with rolling eyes, prayer beads, turkey, crab, cricket bat, Menorah with nine branches, mosque, synagogue, unicorn and the middle finger.

CNET reports that the update also fixed the Live Photos for the camera which stops recording whenever the iPhone is lowered. Other bug fixes it deployed are the CarPlay tools and app switcher. It suggests automatically apps to load or people to connect based on the device owner's usage patterns. Siri got a new interface and now reminds the gadget owner of appointments sans being told to in advance.

The annual updates to the iOS is Apple's way of maintaining customer's interest in its products and ensuring software developers keep on making apps. It also keeps Apple on par with products of competitors that run on Android OS such as Google Now and Google Now On Top that has predictive capabilities.

But the latest update to iOS 9 is minor compared to updates to iOS 7.1 and iOS 8.1 in 2013 and 2014, respectively. The iOS 8.1 added support for Apple Pay, returned the camera roll and launched the iCloud photo library. The iOS 7.1 updated included CarPlay, iTunes Radio and tweaks to Siri.

Since Apple released the update to iOS 9 in September, 61 percent of users of Apple mobile devices have upgraded to the latest update as of Monday. About 30 percent still use iOS 8 and 9 percent older Apple operating systems.
