The Houston Texans released quarterback Ryan Mallett in the middle of the season after he missed the team's flight to Florida last Sunday when they faced the Miami Dolphins for a Week 7 match.
Mallett was able to follow the team to Miami all by himself on a commercial flight and had chalked up his tardiness to Houston's traffic.
Head coach Bill O'Brien was expectedly furious about his player and reportedly had wanted to fire him right then and there, but general manager Rick Smith advised him to wait after the game is over as they do not want to risk facing the Dolphins with only one active quarterback in their roster, as per ESPN.
Mallett's failure to join the team for the flight was said to be the last straw in a series of incidents questioning his professionalism. Aside from that, there were numerous instances that the former New England Patriot was reprimanded because of his tardiness and immaturity.
The 27-year-old, five-year pro was late during their meetings at the team's facility last weekend before the game against Miami. During the offseason, he was also late for the team bus in a scheduled joint practice with the Washington Redskins.
He was also notoriously absent in a practice session two days after O'Brien announced that Brian Hoyer would be the Texans' starting signal caller before the season began, citing "oversleeping" as the reason why he was not around.
Bleacher Report noted that Mallett is set to lose $562,500 or $62,500 per game in earnings due to his firing.
There are no reports of any NFL team interested in his services as of the moment.
