In the latest episode of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7, fans were delighted when they saw Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) make a quick return in episode 3, "Age of Innocence" during a flash forward scene.
Tyler may have left Mystic Falls in the season 6 finale, but executive producer Caroline Dries told TV Line that they wanted to remind viewers that he is still very much part of the show's universe. She pointed out that Tyler was very fortunate to get out of Mystic Falls alive and added that it gave fans a bit of hope knowing what happened to him.
Dries explained that they consider Tyler "one of the success stories of Mystic Falls." After all he was able to successfully leave the past behind but only after telling Stefan (Paul Wesley) that he will always be there if he needed him.
Although the showrunner refused to reveal further details on what happened to Tyler after the three year jump, she hinted that "TVD" fans will get to see more of him in season 7.
In May, Trevino shared that he was actually "surprised" that the producers decided to keep his character for a long time. Speaking to People, the actor explained that it was very challenging to write for Tyler, given his history. He pointed out that after becoming a werewolf, it does not make sense for him to hang around with Stefan and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) much longer.
Trevino said that he was very thankful towards the writers for extending his storyline until the sixth season.
