Premier League defending champions Chelsea FC eyes SSC Napoli's Gonzalo Higuaín in January as a potential replacement for the Blues' woeful goal scorer Diego Costa, who had been struggling to find the back of the net this season.
Daily Mail Online noted that "Chelsea's first-choice striker" is set to face "a fight to maintain his status" at Stamford Bridge. Costa has only played seven out of Chelsea's 12 games so far this season and had only made two goals up front for Jose Mourinho's side.
It was no secret that the Pensioners are looking for more scoring options in the middle of the season, especially with backup strikers Radamel Falcao nursing an injury and Loic Remy not playing up to par, but it is just recently that the name of the Spain international was mentioned to possibly be sold to another team come January.
Foremost of Mourinho's targets when the winter transfer window opens is Napoli striker Higuaín, who had been superb for the Naples club with 11 goals in a total of 14 appearances thus far in the season.
However, Caught Offside reported that the Blues "are prepared to wait until the summer before making a big-money move" as the club is also said to be contemplating on replacing its head coach Mourinho himself.
Rumors of an impending Chelsea signing of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone after his deal with Atleti expires next summer are abuzz as much as Mourinho's anticipated sacking. Reportedly, other managers in the Stamford Bridge shortlist are Bayern Munich's Pep Guardiola, ex-Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, and former Chelsea chief Carlo Ancelotti.
