Google is developing a split-screen multitasking feature for its Android tablets, while Microsoft's Windows tablets and Apple's iPads already have a two-app feature. This helps to address the general problem of Android tablets' lackluster app support. Google believes the solution is to upgrade its hardware, which is represented by the search giant's first-ever fully designed Pixel C tablet now available on Google Play.
Pixel C has a 10.2-inch screen, 32 gigabytes, and attachable keyboard. The new Android tablet's development team went on Reddit to discuss how it can improve the portable computer's few optimized apps and little multitasking support, according to The Verge.
Android and Chrome User Interface Director Glen Murphy shared that his team has been working on several projects, including multi-window. It seems that Android N, which will likely be rolled out next year, would include the split-screen feature. This is especially true due to the mixed reviews that the mobile device has received.
In September Apple added its split-screen multi-tasking feature for iPads running iOS 9. Its "Split View" is only available for a small number of apps, according to PC Mag.
Meanwhile, Microsoft's Surface tablets' "snap" multitasking feature has been available for quite a while. It allows users to run multiple apps on the device's screen at the same time.
Therefore, it is somewhat ironic that Google's brand new high-end Pixel C tablet does not have the feature. However, the $499 device contains other useful features such as the ability to stick it to any metal surface, such as a refrigerator.
