"The X-Files" revival premieres January 2016, and fans will discover many things have changed since the release of the original series in 2002. However, a number of things will remain the same including Walter Skinner's post at the FBI.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Mitch Pileggi dished on his character and gave a reason why Skinner still works for the FBI in the forthcoming six-episode miniseries.
The 63-year-old actor said, "He's still in the same office, [but] he's moved his desk. The reason he's still an assistant director is because he was hanging out with Spooky [Fox Mulder] for too long. He's probably been ostracized a little bit by the other higher ups in the FBI, because he hasn't advanced."
With regard to the question on why he thinks Skinner still works with the FBI amid his marginalized post at the agency, Pileggi said that is what Skinner is. He is a committed character especially to Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), but most importantly, he was dedicated to his job in the FBI.
The Basic Instinct star added, "He, obviously, has connections with people who have power, because he is still there. And I would assume, he has something to do with the 'X-Files' being reopened. No one else in the FBI is going to [take that step] ... what those connections are, I don't know."
Pileggi confirmed that he would be coming back to the series for the next installment. The star tweeted, "Very happy to announce that Walter Skinner will once again be getting all grumpy and bitchy with his two wayward kids."
