The Chinese-Korean film collaboration "Miss Granny" has made its way to the top of China's box-office chart this week and has premiered in Taiwan Tuesday.
Director Leste Chen Zhengdao, together with members of the cast Yang Zishan, Chen Bolin, and EXO's Lu Han, indulged themselves in the spotlight during the Taiwan premiere of the movie about a time-traveling grandma.
During its first full week of theatrical release in China, "Miss Granny" earned $19.34 million from the estimated gross sales of $39.48 million.
According to data from the research group Entgroup, the Korean comedy had collected more than 3 million admissions and had been screened almost 200,000 times in just one week.
Zhengdao offers the Chinese version of a story about a 74-year-old widow Shen Mengjun portrayed by Kuei Ya-Lei.
Also featured in the film is EXO's Lu Han, who plays the grandson who needed Shen Mengjun's help in finding his way through his musical dream.
Early last year, a film of the same title and plot has been released in South Korea under the direction of South Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Released the same time as "Miss Granny" are several chart toppers, including Jeff Bridges-Julianne Moore's "Seventh Son," which earned $16.08 million during the first three days after its opening.
According to China Entertainment, the "Seventh Son" has been expected to be a huge hit in China because of its "distinctly Chinese flavor."
Aside from this, the Hollywood film is also a fruit of an "eight-figure" investment from the China Film Group and has also teamed up with the Chinese mobile gaming company Locojoy.
