Nintendo has already committed to provide more solid details on its rumored hybrid gaming console, the Nintendo NX, later this 2016. It appears, however, that prior to the device's supposed release date the company will roll out mobile games for Android and iOS devices that will highlight iconic Nintendo characters like Mario.

Nintendo fans disappointed by the recent announcement of Miitomo as company's first mobile device application are likely to rejoice with the latest hints dropped by Nintendo chief Tatsumi Kimishima. Kimishima, according to The Wall Street Journal, has opened the door for the likes of Mario, Pokémon and Zelda to soon become playable on iPhones, iPads and Android devices.

As if acknowledging that the imminent arrival of Miitomo, a social media application tool, is not exciting enough, the Nintendo CEO said that the follow up will not disappoint. It will be a gaming app to feature a well-loved Nintendo character.

"The second game won't be another communication app, and we plan to adopt one of our characters that fans are very familiar with," The Journal reported Kimishima as saying.

While Nintendo is yet to provide the specifics the latest statement, fans are quick to suggest that the upcoming Android and iOS will certainly feature the more popular Nintendo characters. BGR said in a report that a Mario game title is a shoo-in but a game centered on Donkey Kong or Zelda cannot be ruled out.

When exactly this Nintendo game for smartphones and tablets will come out is a mystery at the moment but it is highly likely that the launch date will happen before that of the anticipated Nintendo NX unboxing.

The Japanese gaming giant has yet to divulge the juicy details on the NX except allowing that the device being developed represents a new concept. Nintendo also made clear in previous statements that the NX is not designed to replace any of the Wii U gaming console or the 3DS handheld.

Despite the relative silence being observed by Nintendo on the matter, the Nintendo NX, per reports coming from Asia, is believed to begin mass production March 2016 with the unveiling and release date to happen in the third quarter of the year.
