"The Vampire Diaries" has enjoyed popularity for almost seven years. Even with Nina Dobrev's (Elena Gilbert) departure, The CW series continues to gain momentum. Will the series be renewed for an eight season?

When "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 has been moved to the Friday timeslot, along with "The Originals," fans thought that it could only mean that the series is about to get cancelled. The CW, however, insisted that they were only trying to improve their Friday lineup by moving their stronger shows in that timeslot.

According to TV by the Numbers, it seems like The CW made a good call by doing just that. For the week of January 31, "The Vampire Diaries" received a 0.55 rating and scored a 0.81 renewal index. The outlet claimed that the show is "likely to be renewed by May 2016."

Multiple reports suggest that the viewers may have grown tired of the whole vampire trend. It was said that they may be looking for something new, which does not bode well for the series.

Following Dobrev's departure from "The Vampire Diaries," many thought that the show is surely going to get cancelled.

It seems, however, that there is renewed interest for the series, based on the ratings. Some held that fans were curious how to see how Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley), Caroline (Candice Accola) and the rest of the characters will cope with Elena's absence.

Speaking to E! News, "The Vampire Diaries" co-creator Julie Plec admitted that they started to think how the show will end. Although the showrunner did not specify that it will end after season 7, she shared that the series' fate was partly up to Somerhalder and Wesley. She admitted that there will come a time when they will need to end the story of the Salvatore brothers.

"As long as those boys who I now consider my friends want to keep telling the story, then I won't walk away from telling the story," she explained.

When and if Somerhalder and Wesley decide to end their contract, Plec shared that they will surely give fans of "The Vampire Diaries" the ending they deserve.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs Fridays on The CW.
